Description
Late 19th century, 161 x 85 cm, North East Caucasus
The white field of this Daghestan prayer rug contains a repeat of offset rows of palmettes and cone shapes which probably represent the trunks of trees. The hexagonal lattice of serrated leaves commonly found in this type has only been suggested here. The blue arch at the top of the field encloses a house-like form and a comb. Two quadrupeds and two small trees are placed beside it. The red main border shows a vine and abstract birds. – Obvious signs of age and wear, badly soiled, low pile, somewhat reduced ends.
SCHÃœRMANN, ULRICH, Orientteppiche. Ein Bildband. Wiesbaden, no date (1965), ill. p. 62
