Description
PROBABLY BRITISH PICTORIAL MOURNING NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on linen, top with rows of epitaph verses signed "Harriet Hinchliffe.s / Work" at the end, center featuring a church building labeled "Marple / Church" having a graveyard with blank headstones in the yard, three with initials of two "C H" and one "W H", surrounded by various pictorial motifs including trees, birds, cherubs, and a flower urn, all encompassed by a scrolling floral vine border. Housed under glass in a modern frame. 19th century. 24 1/2" x 21 5/8" sight, 26 1/2" x 23 1/2" OA.
Very good visual condition with toning and scattered stains, some losses to wool thread, small holes along the edges caused by stretcher nails/tacks, two moderate holes to top and bottom edges, a few scattered small holes, frame with minor wear and surface scratches, some losses along bottom notably to lower right corner. Not examined out of frame.
