A rare original printing of a Sermon, "The Character and Influence of Abolitionism.", by Henry J. Van Dyke, measuring 5.5" x 8.25, 40 pages, including 2 pages of period ads at end, its original faded blue paper covers intact. In this speech, Van Dyke's opinion is that Abolitionism at its fanatical level can be just as bad, and that the bible sanctions Slavery. On a historical note, the United States Presidential Election of 1860 was the nineteenth quadrennial Presidential election to select the President and Vice President of the United States. The election was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1860. In a four-way contest, the Republican Party ticket of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin emerged triumphant. The election of Lincoln served as the primary catalyst of the American Civil War. This historic Imprint on Slavery is certainly missing in most Black History and Slavery related collections.
The American Civil War (also known by other names) was a civil war that was fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. As a result of the long-standing controversy over slavery, war broke out in April 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, shortly after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was Inaugurated. The nationalists of the Union proclaimed loyalty to the U.S. Constitution. They faced secessionists of the Confederate States, who advocated for states' rights to expand slavery.
