"FOR PRESIDENT - ABRAHAM LINCOLN" Legend for John Gault's 1864 Lincoln Presidential Campaign Ferrotype
1864 Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson Presidential Campaign. Ferrotype Photograph Medal With Attached Silk Ribbon. John Gault's (Encased Postage Stamp Design Style) Patent. Gilt Brass. Political and Patriotic. DeWitt/Sullivan AL 1864-94. King #145. Choice About New.
25 mm. A choice quality example with its original White Silk Suspension Ribbon partially intact. The Obverse design has dual Patriotic Union Shields decorating the mica covered openings. The flat circular metallic gilt brass frame bears a decorative oak and olive wreath, and Six Stars with the large inscription reading: "FOR PRESIDENT - ABRAHAM LINCOLN." The reverse displays a central Tintype Portrait of Andrew Johnson, with an olive wreath encircling his portrait and the large Inscription surround reading: "FOR VICE PRESIDENT - ANDREW JOHNSON" with Stars to the right and left. John Gault's master Patent date is imprinted on lower rim in tiny letters, "Pat AUG. 12, 1862." This historic Presidential Campaign political Abraham Lincoln item is also directly related to the collecting of Encased Postage Stamps of the Civil War era as both item types were designed and produced under the original U.S. Patent of John Gault. This specimen measures about 1" in diameter, is holed at top as made for suspension as always, still retaining a portion of the original white and black silk suspension ribbon. The central Obverse Tintype photograph portrait is of a bearded Abraham Lincoln from 1864. Both Tintype photographs are clear with good contrast, some irregularities on Lincoln's face portrait and having a small emulsion disturbance around Andrew Johnson's Tintype image. Both Portraits are very well centered. A scarce 1864 Presidential Campaign Ferrotype by John Gault's design.
