Civil War
Three Books Relating to the Recounting of the Full Historic General Sickles Trial the First "Temporary Insanity" Defense
1870-Dated Hardcover Leather Book Compliation titled, "TRIALS OF Mc.FARLAND - SICKLES & - (JOHN) BROWN", by F. G. Slone, three historic trials including DANIEL EDGAR SICKLES, later a Union Major General, being the first man Acquitted of a Murder charge on the legal grounds of "Temporary Insanity", plus Two Additional Reference Books (3 Books).
Three books relating to General Sickles, as follows:

1. 1870-Dated Hardcover Leather Book Compliation, TRIALS OF Mc.FARLAND - SICKLES & - (JOHN) BROWN", by F. G. Slone, three historic trials that includes a foreword regarding the first use of "Temporary Insanity" one of three composite titles within: First, "The Trial of Daniel McFarland for the Shooting of Albert D. Richardson, the Alleged Seducer of his Wife," 209 pages, plus 20+ pages of court records; Second, "The Washington Tragedy" (author unknown), 196 pages; and Third, "The Life, Trial and Execution of Captain John Brown, Known as 'Old Brown of Ossawatomie,' with a Full Account of the Attempted Insurrection at Harper's Ferry," published by Robert M. DeWitt of New York, 106 pages. In review, both McFarland and Sickles killed their wive's lovers, and both used a "Temporary Insanity" defense -- Sickles was the first to do so and was Acquitted as a result. The John Brown, Harpers Ferry account includes some great engraved full page images. Overall, bound in calf with marbled covers, worn from use as usual. Inside the pages show some toning and a few trivial edge chips, but this rare book is sound. Of course, the period text is lengthy and fascinating. An important reference for any historical library or collection. Rare. (*Total lot estimate value is based on this book alone).

2. 1956-Dated Book, "Sickles The Incredible," by W.A. Swanberg, 317 pages, a biography of Sickles from 1857 to his death, Paperback, Fine.

3. 2002-Bated Book, "American Scoundrel: The Life of the Notorious Civil War General Dan Sickles" by Thomas Keneally, 356 pages plus notes and index, a biography of Sickles from 1853 to his death, Paperback, Very Fine.
