Description
Maurice Wilkins, DNA Co-Nobel Prize Winner

An autograph letter signed by British molecular Maurice Wilkins (1916-2004) as "M H F Wilkins" at lower right, thanking an autograph collector for his congratulations following Wilkins's Nobel Prize co-win. Written in New York City on October 20, 1962. On a piece of pale blue speckled paper mounted on an autograph scrapbook album page with Wilkins's biographical entry at top. Expected light folds and wrinkles, else near fine. 5.125" x 4.25". Overall album page measures 8.375" x 10.375". Accompanied by a post Nobel Prize period newspaper clipping, circa 1962.

Wilkins's work with X-rays at King's College London in the late 1940s provided the clearest images yet captured of DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid. Using these photographs, Wilkins's colleagues James Watson and Francis Crick were able to correctly describe the double-helical physical structure of DNA. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for their work on DNA in 1962. Their collaboration paved the way for future genetics research.
