Description
Rare and impressive, original Rookwood lamp with Iris glaze scenic vase painted by Fred Rothenbusch, circa 1911 and with Handel fittings including an 18 inch Handel chipped ice shade with reverse painted woodbine decoration, base, stem and sockets. The Iris glaze snow scene stands 14 1/4 inches tall by itself and is marked with the company logo and Rothenbusch’s incised monogram. The factory hole for wiring removes the shape number (which we believe to be 1652 B) and the date. The shade is marked Handel on the fitter ring and is shown in a Handel ad reproduced in De Falco and Hibel on page 12, figure 8 as shape 6785. Overall height is 27 inches. There is a small amount of crazing in the snow area of the Rookwood vase but excellent condition overall with newer wiring and cord. Oral history indicates the lamp to have been one of three made for three of the Pogue brothers, owners of Pogues Department Store here in Cincinnati.
