Description
Rare example of Bailey’s Red, a copper luster glaze developed at Rookwood by Master Potter Joseph Bailey around 1895. Bailey was attempting to create a match for Chinese Oxblood and managed to develop the coppery red which bears his name. Few of these pieces were made, fewer survive and this one has floral decoration under the glaze done by Matt Daly which is all but dominated by the glaze itself. Marks include the partially obscured Rookwood logo, indicating the date and shape number and Daly’s impressed monogram. Also present is the number 188:00 in red paint, an acquisition number from the Cincinnati Art Museum. Height 5 3/4 inches. There are dimples and runs in the glaze but what a glaze it is.
