Description
This lot consists of a graphite illustration on paper, done in the soft, tasteful style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). "Degas" is written by hand at lower left corner. This delightful, sketched image depicts a young ballerina in motion, arching forward in a dramatic gesture. Most likely a study for a larger work of art. An outstanding Impressionist highlight for any collection. Overall unframed measurements are approximately 14" x 11".
Edgar Degas (French, 1834 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially associated with the subject of the theatre; more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman and particularly masterly in depicting movement, which can clearly be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and anatomical studies. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
