Description
This lot consists of a graphite illustration on paper, done in the soft, tasteful style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). "Degas" is written by hand at lower right. This delightful, sketched image depicts a young ballerina in motion, arching forward in a dramatic gesture. Her delicate figure is perfectly encased by a studied grid, suggesting that this piece was a study for a larger painting. An outstanding Impressionist highlight for any collection. Overall unframed measurements are approximately 9.5" x 7.25".
Reverse side of piece features a circular stamp at top right corner which reads, "Collection Simon. 29 Rue d'Astorg. Paris."
Edgar Degas (French, 1834 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially associated with the subject of the theatre; more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman and particularly masterly in depicting movement, which can clearly be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and anatomical studies. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
