Description
This lot consists of a watercolor and gouache painting on paper, done in the avant-garde style of Natalia Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962). This rich image depicts a sacred scene, perhaps the altar of a splendid church, replete with jewel tones of sapphire, ruby, gold, and emerald. A highly unusual, beaded applique border is not to be overlooked. A bold and stirring piece that would grace any collection. This unframed work of art measures approximately 11.25" x 14.5".
Natalia Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962) was a multimedia artist and radical thinker who held an incalculable influence over the Russian avant-garde. The blending of sacred and profane imagery was a motif that Goncharova was naturally drawn to, leading to a great deal of harassment from the public. Aesthetically, Goncharova strove to adjoin Western and Eastern traditions, celebrating heritage and everyday culture.
