This lot consists of a mixed media illustration on paper, done in the Surrealist style of Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976). A handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Max Ernst". Image depicts a female figure who appears to be asleep, images swirling in the space above her like a busy mind trying to unravel itself. This atmospheric piece would make a strong addition to any collection of modern art. Unframed piece measures approximately 16.5" x 22".
Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976) was a paintor, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. He was a leading member of the Dada and the Surrealist art movements of the early 20th century. Ernst was famously wed to Peggy Guggenheim for a brief period in the early 1940s. Ernst's colleagues and co-conspirators were some of the other great and defining artists of the day -- from Man Ray to Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall.

Condition
Piece is in overall good condition. Paper has bends, folds and crease marks throughout. Edges and corners have bumps and chips. Please view photos for more information. Overall image and signature remain crisp and show very well.
