A large Japanese carved wood figure of the seated BuddhaKamakura period or laterOf pieced, hollow form, the Buddha seated in dhyanasana, the eyes inset with reverse-painted glass or crystal, the surface retaining traces of lacquer, the interior with a lengthy ink inscription, which may be partially translated: "Ordered by Takamatsu temple...Nindo in Kyoto made it and Yoshitada Kikuzono helped...Setsu shu Sumiyoshi Jingo mountain Jion-temple...restorer - Shakugendo-do 1702..."H: 27 1/2 in.PROVENANCE:Private Collection, New York, NY.
