Description
PAVEL TCHELITCHEW
(Russian 1898-1957)
Portrait of Jane Heap
watercolor
signed P. Tchelitchew titled Jane Heap and numbered 20 verso
sheet: 22 x 17 1/2 in. frame: 37 1/2 x 19 1/2 in.
Provenance: Purchased in 1986 as a 50th birthday present for a Little Rock Arkansas Lady. The Lady was a long-time board member of the Arkansas Arts Center and she and her husband were close friends with AAC director Townsend Wolfe. Wolfe who made works on paper a primary focus of the AAC advised the Lady and her husband as they built their collection. He traveled to New York several times a year on buying trips for both the museum and for his friends and it is likely that this painting was purchased by Wolfe on behalf of the Lady and her husband on one of these trips.
Other Notes: Jane Heap (1883-1964) an American publisher and editor of The Little Review played an integral role in the development and promotion of literary modernism. Heap was a member of Leo and Gertrude SteinÕs inner circle as well as many other forward-thinking groups and organizations.
