Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Janaka Province, Wangi people, ca. early 20th century CE. A wedge-shaped wooden axe set into a wooden cavity that extends outwards, mirroring the blade shape at one elongated end to form an adze, which also serves as a counterweight to the blade. The wood is wrapped in woven rattan with leather and a loosely woven fabric further binding the axe head. A narrow, cylindrical wooden handle at a ninety degree angle to the axe provides a hand hold. This form of axe is similar to those made mainly in the villages of Margravial and Kumbirai. Size: 19.5" W x 20.5" H (49.5 cm x 52.1 cm); 20.75" H (52.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Small chips, nicks, and scratches commensurate with age. The cloth is slightly worn with a rich patina but still present. The rattan is in nice condition with some small areas of fraying.
