Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. 2000 to 0 BCE. A short-bodied, thin stone celt or hand axe, made to cut through foliage and dig into the earth, and composed of a beautiful, deep forest green stone. Oaxaca's stone tools are part of a fascinating legacy - Oaxaca is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site as the earliest place on the continent to have domesticated plants. Size: 2.55" W x 4" H (6.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, purchased in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1988
