Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-carved wooden figure depicting a Lord-King, perhaps once used as the handle or finial or a royal staff or scepter. The figure is shown in a kneeling pose atop an integral rectangular plinth, holding both bent arms atop his skirt-adorned lap, and has hemispheric protrusions centered on the chest and in-between the shoulder blades. The abstract countenance features broad, almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, a tapered mandible with a petite mouth, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a simple cap. Fine patina envelops the entire carving and makes for an attractive presentation. Size: 1.4" W x 4.1" H (3.6 cm x 10.4 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s

Condition
Repairs to small areas of one arm and cap, with chips and very light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to plinth, limbs, body, and head, with softening to finer details, and several stable fissures. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout. Old inventory label behind integral plinth.
