Description
Continental, 17th/18th century. Rare large woven altar cloth/hanging or table carpet tapestry with hand woven wool warp and weft in elaborate florals and leaves on border surrounding banded composition with flowers within laurel wreaths with bowed ribbon at bottom on tan ground, brocade motif alternating in yellows, tans, and greens, applied embroidered silk work throughout with winged angels or cherubs, birds, flowers, central medallion with seated Christ figure with halo holding an orb representing the world in his lap within heart shaped medallion, Latin text in serpentine vines accented with flowers reading "Sic AMI CA MEA SI CUT LILI UM IN TER SPI NAS" referencing the Biblical verse from Song of Solomon 2:2, "Like a lily among the thorns". Overall measures approximately 121" x 157.5". Note: The majority of floral motif tapestry-woven table carpets were produced by the Dutch in the 17th century, due to the silk work and color palette, this work may be a later interpretation of the Dutch type by the Italians or the French. The portrayal of the putti or cherubs encircled by wings is typically Italian.

Overall good condition with even wear to pile. Few scattered repairs to tears--not distracting. Small scattered tears approx. 1" - 2" in length. Scattered loose threads and black thread infill--likely for repairs to prior tears. Backing appears new. Hole to backing to corner. No apparent odors.
