Notes & Literature The Cross of the Order of Christ or Cross of Portugal is the emblem of the historical Order of Christ , (also called Order of the Knights of Christ ) of Portugal . Since then it has become a symbol intrinsic to Portugal, used for example in the sails of the ships of the time of the Discoveries , the Portuguese Navy ships and the flag of the Autonomous Region of Madeira . It is also used in the Coat of Arms of Tomar , along with the Templar Cross , which was the seat of the Order of the Templars in the Kingdom of Portugal and the Order of Christ, successor of the former.
