100 The 1st Century - History of B. Altman
Some explanations of the reasons for preparing this history of B. Altman & Co. is probably appropriate. In the first place, 1965 marks the Company's one hundredth anniversary, and it was thought that this history could be a proper way to recognize such a milestone. Furthermore, since so little of the knowledge of the earlier events in Altman's past is in written form, it seemed a good idea to get some of it put to paper while there were still people around who remember events of the past." B. Altman and Company was a New York City-based department store and chain founded in 1865 by Benjamin Altman which had its flagship store at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan from 1906 until the company closed on December 31, 1989. Illustrated with period photographs.
