Description
Pre-Columbian Mayan Jade Camahuile

Camahuiles are small statues in the shape of axes, carved with figures that resemble humans with simple lines and geometric patterns. They are still used today for traditional rituals among the Maya of Guatemala's western highlands, where they have been frequently found in archaeological areas. Only a few though have been uncovered in well-documented archaeological contexts. A ritual deposit of camahuiles dating to the beginning of the early Classic was found at the La Lagunita site in the department of Quiche, confirming that they were in use by this time and possibly long before.
