John George Brown (New York, California, 1831-1913) oil on canvas painting depicting a a coastline with a rocky outcrop in the foreground and a lighthouse in the background. Signed and dated "J. G. Brown 1877" lower right. Biography: John George Brown was a British citizen and an American painter born in Durham, England. He studied at Newcastle-on-Tyne, in the Edinburgh Academy, and at the schools of the National Academy of Design after moving to New York in 1853. In 1866 he became one of the charter members of the Water-Colour Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. He generally confined himself to representations of street child life, bootblacks, newsboys, etc., exemplified in his "Passing Show" (Paris, Salon, 1877) and "Street Boys at Play" (Paris Exhibition, 1900) one man exhibitions. Good condition overall some separation of original canvas from backing along edge. Small tear in lower right by signature. Canvas has been relined.
