Condition: Very Good
Condition details: This piece is in very good condition. With the unaided eye, there are no issues. Closer inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no issues and no signs of restoration. The work is mounted under glass and has not been inspected out of the frame. The piece is framed in a brown frame with a cream linen liner, gold fillet, and a cream matting. The matting is signed; ‘Kit Carson Becomes Vih-Hiu-Nis Which Means Little Chief’ From the Sketch Book of Byron B. Wolfe. The frame is in very good condition with normal wear. Verso on the back of the piece: “KIT CARSON BECOMES Vih-hiu-nis which means LITTLE CHIEF”. TIME – 1832-1833. PLACE – Upper Arkansas River – Bent’s Fort, Colorado. REF. – Kit Carson – A Portrait of Courage by M. Morgan Estergreen. Dear Old Kit – by Harvey Lewis Carter. NOTE – The Cheyenne honored Kit Carson with the name “VIH-HIU-NIS” which means LITTLE CHIEF for his great skills in tracking a party of crows who expected to be attacked from the north. Kit attacked from the south. This was a skillful maneuver and Kit and his men won the fight.
