(BENJAMIN FRANKLIN) (1706-1790). A Founding Father of the United States, a leading Author, Printer, Political theorist, Politician, Freemason, Postmaster, Scientist, Inventor, Civic activist, Statesman, and Diplomat.
This scarce Book was Printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall in his historic Philadelphia print shop is fully titled: "The Anarchy of the Ranters, and other Libertines; The Hierarchy of the Romanists, and other Pretended Churches", by Robert Barclay, 1757, Philadelphia, 120 pages, measures 7" x 4.5", Fine. Bound in its original contemporary brown calf hard covers, with the spine skillfully restored and gold-stamped. The author, Robert Barclay (1648-90) was an important Scottish Quaker religious writer, who was much concerned with defining Quakerism in relation to Roman Catholicism, mainstream Protestantism, and other sects such as the Ranters. This work was first published in 1674, a period of great religious ferment, takes on the Ranters, one of the Antinomian ("against law") sects which appeared in England during the first half of the 17th century. Some light even tone and wear to the covers, fully intact and easily legible.
