Description
An antique Mexican retablo / Folk Art style painting; polychrome pigments on tin. Titled "The Powerful Hand of God" / “La Mano Poderosa de Dios”. The Icon painting depicts the bleeding hand of the crucified Christ, the blood pouring down into an overflowing chalice with lambs drinking from the resulting fountain. Above the hand, the 5 members of the Holy Family are seated on individual clouds: The Virgin Mary, and her mother, St. Anne, holding flowering staffs with lilies, the Christ Child carrying a cross and shield, St. Joseph holding a flowering staff with roses, and St. Joachim holding an ordinary staff. Indistinctly signed and dated lower left. Measures 12.75" x 9-3/8". Housed in a gilt wood frame under glass, 16-7/8" x 12-7/8" x 1" deep.
