Description
1773 The Chase HUNTING Hobbinol Olympicks Illustrated Somervile English Poetry
William Somervile was an English poet who is best remembered for his 1735 epic poem ‘The Chase’. Like the original georgic poem by Virgil, Somervile wrote his georgic ‘The Chase’ in a manner than helped originate and establish the style used in the English georgic.
In this poem, Somervile describes aspects of hunting in medieval and Renaissance England, management and care of hounds, fox and hare hunting, as well as otter trapping and hunting. This 1773 printing is notable for its impressive full-page engravings – views of hunting dogs and horseback chase scenes. This edition also includes Somervile’s ‘Hobbinol’. This poem was a popular poem that described the Cotswold Olympicks, 17th-century games and events that included horse racing, running races, wrestling, and dancing.
