A rare, late 19th-century account from Frederick Schwatka on Arctic voyages and expeditions. ‘A Summer in Alaska’ is a “description of the military exploring expedition made in 1883 to explore the Yukon River to determine its military utility.” (Decker). Schwatka describes various Eskimo and Indian tribes including the Chilkat and Tsimpsean people, Indian death and funeral rituals, volcanos, salmon and trout fishing, and even an account of Mastodon bones!
The Arctic Bibliography notes,
“A detailed narrative for general readers of the Alaska Military Reconnaissance 1883 with running comment on the country traversed, on the Indians, Eskimos, and their customs.”
