18th Century Portable Double-Pan Coin Scale with Weights
c. 1750 Rare 18th Century Portable Double-Pan Coin Scale with Weights in its Original Wooden Case, Very Fine.
This Colonial era Coin Scale is housed in a black painted, wooden case measuring 2.25" x 5.25" x 1" high. Unknown maker, no date. Lovely orange Handwriting (in paint) identifies the various Gold coins that would have been weighed with this set: Caroliners (French), Pistoles (Spanish or French), Ducats (European), and Son-Pis. This Scale is still fully intact and in working condition with old twine attaching the pans to the arms. Six decorative total weights of the period are included; one weight is missing for the Son-Pis and some fractional weights are missing in the compartment at upper right (however, period weights are often available online to complete the set). The cover is original, properly hinged and in good condition with normal wear. The hinges work perfectly, as does the hinged brass swing lock at top.
