Description
Miniature circa 19th c. manuscript Koran, measuring 2.25" x 2", containing 193 leaves including 25 leaves with illuminated decorations, text throughout in combinations of brown, green, red, and blue ink, with borders ruled in red and green. On laid paper. Bound in period dark red morocco covers. **************** A beautiful manuscript. Laid onto the inside cover is a late 19th or early 20th c. note stating that this manuscript was owned by Sir E. A. Wallis Budge. Budge (1857–1934) was an important British Egyptologist who made many trips to Egypt and Sudan to acquire various antiquities (primarily for the British Museum.) He also published many books on the subject. Affixed inside the other cover is a mid-20th c. label from the J. B. Speed Art Museum library, noting this manuscript as being a gift bequeathed by Miss Carolyn Leech in 1956. The current consignor purchased the manuscript from the Museum library in 1986, and it is here offered at auction.
