Description

SCARCE Circa 1890s Cabinet Card Photograph; Depiction of a suspicious gang of 6 men wielding pocket pistols, and one larger revolver gun. In an apparent attempt to conceal his identity and disassociate with this crew, the photographer has chosen to mount a larger than usual photograph on a cabinet card mount--covering over his name and the location of his studio. Only a small part of two letters in the photograpers extend beyond the photo. Pencil writing on the reverse reads; "Mr. Ames". The subjects are mostly dressed in what could be described as working class, street clothing...loose fitting jackets, informal shirts, a cardigan, vests...only one neck tie in the bunch.
This photograph was found recently in an old collection of Cleveland, Ohio items. The previous owner thought that these men were members of the McCart Street Gang, but I can not substantiate that claim. (Online research locates an article at Cleveland Historical by Jim Dubelko regarding the McCart Street Gang, also known as "the Gang from Cheyenne". The gang was composed of 1st and 2nd generation Irish men and boys. They worked around McCart Street or present day 69th street in Cleveland between 1888 and 1890s. Vicious and daring, they often committed crimes in broad daylight.) This photograph could benefit from further research. Approximate mount card size is 4-1/4" x 6-1/2". Condition: light soiling, scuffs, edge wear.
