TITLE: 'Sand Dunes #4, Death Valley, CA, 1954'

IMAGE SIZE: 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 in
DESCRIPTION: Signed in pencil mount recto. Stamped, titled, and signed in pencil verso. Printed later. Dedicated extensively to the Byers family in ink mount verso.
From the collection of Robert K. Byers, with the collection stamp and numbering verso. Acquired from the artist.
William Garnett (1916-2006) was an aerial photographer who cultivated a passion for flying and photography after serving as a cameraman in WWII. Garnett photographed and flew simultaneously in his 1956 Cessna across California and abroad. Garnett attained notoriety early in his career, participating in 7 exhibitions at the MoMA, NY from 1955-67, with several more throughout the intervening decades. Garnett is known today not only as the pioneer of aerial photography, but also for his innovations in post-war abstraction.
