Item Details
Description
Superb, Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Chenghua, famille noir Fahua lotus porcelain Meiping jar. The Finest porcelain shaped into a traditional Meiping form, thick potted, with a narrow base toward wide ovoid shoulder body, with slight cylindrical neck to form a petite opening flaring mouth rim, raised on round flat flaring foot base. All reserved in famille noir underglaze base color which contrast against the pale blue color. In Chinese it is called Hei Ci, meaning the black family, It is a general term for porcelain with a black glaze. It first appeared in the Eastern Han period in Shangyu and Ningbo in the south. The north only began producing it after the Eastern Jin Period. The black color achieved by applying a copper-green lead based enamel over an unfired coating of the dry black cobalt which are also used for black outlines. During the firing the two enamels fused resulting in a deep black effect with a hint of green especially visibly where the two layers doesn't fully cover each other. The main body delicately fine depicted with huge various flowers blooms called flowers of the four seasons among water plants, enclosed with thrashing wavy Lishui water on the upper belly. The shoulder adorned with interlocking scrolling tendril and foliage, enclosed with single thick pale white ring lines. And the foot rim decorated with thrashing cresting wavy Lishui water, enclosed with single thick pale white ring lines. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground revealed and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. The porcelain conformed all required specimen to be high valued Chinese porcelain wares, with finest material, the whiteness, the glaze, and the carving. Without overlap the outlines of the design, well carved, clear, subtle, distinct, and the shape is uniformly proportioned.
