Description
"The Sermon", SLR, oil on canvas, 36 x 20, 42 x 26 1/2"
Guatemalan painter. He was born on January 11, 1927 and died at the wrong time on June 8, 1954. He made his first studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Guatemala City from 1941 to 46, and began painting portraits, his talent was obviously masterful.
At the same time, he produced a series of murals with robust characters influenced by contemporary Mexican muralism, especially in Diego Rivera, for example his work “Trabajando en el Campo” 1948. He worked in these times without his own style, but trained as a great artist , undergoing a great transformation in 1948 in New York. He lived in the United States for 3 years, being in direct contact with new artistic trends, and immediately managed to get his own formal language. Ossaye continues with a rapid evolution, using color and highly expressive shapes full of tension and movement. He employed a wide variety of media: watercolor, encaustic, gouache, oil, tempera, pyroxylin, and tinting.
Undoubtedly, he was one of the most recognized artists of his generation in Guatemala despite his premature death . His latest works were very powerful, teaching the different aspects of life, reflecting the tragedy and pain of the Dominican Republic, the country of his wife, Georgia Tejera de Ossaye, through the painting "El Calvario".
