A striking portrait of a youth from Guatemala by American artist Gayle Crites, painted on location in Panajachel, Guatemala in February of 1994. The boy wears a traditional woven chaqueta (jacket) of vibrant hues and wonderful indigenous patterns. Crites' brushwork is loose and palpably kinetic - a quality that captures both the interior and exterior worlds of her subjects - and her command of light and color is quite masterful. Guatemala continues to inspire Crites. In a review for Southwest Art, Crites stated, "Guatemala is visually stimulating. The Indians still wear clothes reminiscent of their Mayan ancestors." What's more, her passion for Guatemala extends to her admiration for pre-Columbian artifacts, "the older, the better … They have the richest surfaces and I’m fascinated by their history. What were they used for? Who used them? These objects are so mysterious." ("Gayle Crites" by Janet Daily, June 1, 1997).

Born in Denver, Colorado, Gayle Crites graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in visual art and has been exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Chicago, and other major cultural centers.

Painting is in excellent condition. Minor scuffs/nicks to the frame, but otherwise the frame is very nice as well. Signed "G. Crites" on lower left. There is a label on the verso that includes, "Painted on location in Pana jachel, Guatemala, February, 1994". Wired for suspension and ready to display.
