Ella Iranyi, Austrian Jewish Impressionist/Modernist artist, oil on canvas, Budapest City Scene, dated 1927, SLR, 9 1/2 x 12", 12 x 15".Ella Iranyi (1888–1942 killed in Izbica ghetto, Poland), AustrianElla Iranyi was born on April 5, 1888, in Vienna, Austria. She trained as an artist at the Viennese Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen, one of the first art schools for women. She became a member of the Wiener Werkstatte. She had a successful career as an illustrator and graphic artist. In March 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria. Policies to persecute the Jewish popuaiton were soon in place. Iranyi was Jewish and was deported from Vienna, Austria, to Izbica, Poland, ca. 1939, where she perished, age 54, on April 9, 1942.
