African American artist. 24 x 28 in., 27 x 31 in. (framed). Leroy Gaskin, 75, a former art teacher who retired in 1998 after 26 years as supervisor of art instruction for Prince George's County schools, died of multiple myeloma Aug. 5 at Prince George's Hospital Center. He lived in North Englewood.Dr. Gaskin worked 48 years for the county public school system, beginning in 1950 as an art teacher at Fairmont Heights Senior High School. After 20 years at Fairmont Heights, he joined the faculty at Largo Senior High School and taught art there for two years.In addition to serving as the countywide art instruction supervisor, he served as an adult education teacher and commercial art teacher. He served on education-related boards and panels of the National Gallery of Art, the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.He was a painter and sculptor, exhibiting his works in Washington area galleries. He also was past president of the D.C. Art Association and the Maryland Art Education Association.Dr. Gaskin was born in Norfolk. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from what is now Hampton University in Hampton, Va., received a master's degree in art education from Columbia University and a doctorate in art and museum education from the University of Pennsylvania.In 1977, Dr. Gaskin surprised doctors when he survived Legionnaires' disease, which he contracted during a business trip to Indiana.He was a deacon at Vermont Avenue Baptist Church in Washington and a YMCA volunteer.
