Walter Shirlaw was born in Paisley, Scotland. Was a genre painter, died in Madrid, Spain in 1909. He came to America and worked as a bank note engraver. He lived and painted in Germany for 7 years. He was known as a genre painter but also did illustration work. In 1875 he became president of Society of American Artist. He was an instructor at the Art Students League. Elected member of the National Academy of Design in 1885 and was a member of the Society of American Artist among other notable memberships and international awards.
