Together with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc , the art historian shared the artistic principle that art is subjective, and from this point of view he also re-evaluated art.Table of Contents lifeFritz Burger grew up in a wealthy home; the family owned a banking business in Munich. After studying architecture at the Technical University in Munich and practicing as an architect, Burger changed his subject and place of study in 1900 and began studying art history with Henry Thode in Heidelberg . From the age of 19 he undertook extensive educational trips, first to Paris and Italy, spent a long time in England in 1902 and married Clara von Duhn, the daughter of the Heidelberg archaeologist Friedrich von Duhn , in the same year. In 1903 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and in 1907 a large one. Burger completed his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1903; he spent a long time with his family in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1903/04 and in Florence and Paris between 1904 and 1906.In the same year he habilitated for modern art history at the University of Munich , where he taught art history as a private lecturer until August 1914. Annual study visits to Italy and France remained the rule. In addition to his university teaching activities, Burger taught art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1912 and shortly after his convocation, immediately after the outbreak of war in August 1914, he decided to become an associate professor. Burger entered military service at the foot artillery in 1915. In the spring of 1916 he was transferred to the Western Front , where Fritz Burger died in the Battle of Verdun on May 22, 1916.During his time in Munich, Fritz Burger was in close contact with the art world of galleries and artist studios. From around 1911, Burger began to work artistically. After initial attempts in oil , he then turned mainly to pastel technique. In the following years, further works emerged as charcoal drawings or etchings . Until 1915, the choice of topics was based exclusively on the landscape or the private environment of Burgers. This choice of topics changed in 1916. Well shaped by the war and the threatened personal existence, Burger tried to implement supernatural, with symbolic image inventions and he himself saw his artistic path near the " Blue Rider ".Fritz Burger embodies an art historian who oriented art history to the contemporary modern of the early 20th century and sought access to the artwork through an artistic approach. With his early work on Renaissance art , Burger made substantial contributions to the subject's knowledge and research inventory, while his most important scientific project was the drafting of a "Systematics of Art Science", which was realized in the form of the "Handbook of Art Science" from 1913. Burger was convinced that there had to be a necessary shift in the previously dominant conceptual interpretations of art in favor of descriptive knowledge. His view that the artistic activity is to be understood as a process of cognitive and sensual experience was the focus of his training in his "Artistic internship" at the University of Munich."
