Born in Wielopole Skrzynskie near Krakow, the Polish artist Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990) studied from 1936 to 1939 at the Academy in Krakow. After a life in the underground during the Second World War he participated from 1945 significantly in the revival of cultural life in Krakow.

Kantor's artistic is multi-discipline. He worked in a crossover as visual artist, theater director and stage designer and performed the first happening in Poland in 1965. He is known especially for his stage sculpture â€ËœThe Dead Classâ€â„¢ from 1975, with which he advanced to the internationally most important representative of the Theatre of the Absurd.

In 1987 Kantor was represented at Documenta VIII with the performance of â€ËœThe Death of Love Machineâ€â„¢. His painterly oeuvre developed from a surrealist influence to object images and conceptual works.
