Description
The map shows the Gulf Coast of what are today the US states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana between approximately the Texan border and Cape San Blas in the Florida panhandle, and the Mississippi river to 40 North (approximately the Missouri/Iowa border). The area was at the time a French colony. marked on the map are Nouvelle [New] Orleans, "le Forte Condé de la Mobile" (present day Mobile, Alabama). The mission and settlement at Caskakias (Kaskaskia), the capital of French Upper Louisiana, is shown (today Kaskaskia, Illinois, close to St Louis, Missouri). The French Mission at "Cahokias ou Tamaroas" in present day Cahokia, Illinois (part of Greater St Louis) is marked. Many Indian villages and tribal names and regions are marked on the map. Pensacola is marked. The French Fort Crevecouer near Port St Joe, Florida, and the nearby Spanish fort at Apalachicola are marked. Other French forts marked include Fort St Pierre des Yazous, Fort Rosalie (Natchez, Mississippi), Fort de la Pointe Coupée.
