"Although Crumb's content seemed radically new, his drawings and sense of humor were based on older forms of comics that had gone out of style by 1960.... Crumb went back to the roots of American culture and twisted them to represent what he felt inside. As he put it, 'Comics are an American art form. The way to turn people's heads is to take a medium they're familiar with and then do something new...'" - Françoise Mouly, "It's Only Lines on Paper," Masters of American Comics [Yale University Press: 2005].
