A beautiful oil on canvas fall landscape in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Mt. Chocorua in the distant view. Signed lower left and dated 1864. A preserved note of the period now mounted on the reverse reads, 'An autumn landscape of Benj. Champney of Boston, with Chocorua, a peak of White Mts in the distance. Painted for Florence Foster in the fall of 1865.' Canvas size 12 x 20 inches, 17-1/2 x 25.5 inch period frame with custom corners.

Very fine, relined and professionally restored. The in painting is estimated to equal 10% or less by actual volume of the surface. This includes a peppering of very tiny pinpoint touches across the area of the sky which are pictured in the 10th image under black light.
