Description
MORTIER EDOUARD: (1768-1835) Marshal of France, Duc de Treviso. Prime Minister of France 1834-35. A good L.S., `Ed. Mortier´, a bold and large good signature example, with flourish, two pages, 4to, Zernin sous Colberg, 5th April 1807, to General Grandjean, in French. A very interesting military content letter, Mortier stating `..It is unfortunate that you have to retreat from Stettin.. I have a strong uncertainty regarding the Wollin position. It is very important that the position is occupied… When reporting these events to the Emperor, I did not allow him to ignore the very little forces you have remaining before Stralsund, as well as the very superior forces you have to face. Send me every day an officer with a report of the enemy troops movements.´ Further and before concluding, Mortier refers again to the Emperor, saying `I urge the Emperor to send me orders; if I hadn´t been afraid to thwart operations, I would have immediately lifted the blockade of Colberg to join you and overthrow the enemy..´ The present letter was written short before the Battle of Friedland. With blank integral leaf. Paper bearing watermark. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise G £150-200
