Description
Oil painting roof-top city view. Measuring 26 x 22 inches framed, painting only 20 x 16 inches. Fine condition. Born in Warrensburg, MO on July 18, 1886. Probst studied with Iner Olsen and Viggo Langer as well as in Italy, Germany, Denmark, and the U.S. by 1916 he had settled in Los Angeles and was active in the local art scene.The Franciscan missions were a favorite subject in his paintings and pen-and-ink drawings. His work is amply illustrated in Poems of California Missions (1923), a book authored by his wife, Leeta. Probst, Thorwald A. (1886-1948). In 1926 he opened the Beverly Hills Art Gallery where he sold both his own as well as the works of other local artists. Probst died in LA on Dec. 24, 1948.From a Prominent California Collection.
