Description
**Originally Listed At $225**

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Ignazia, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery wine cup (skyphos) presenting a classic silhouette. The piriform body boasts remarkably thin walls and is supported atop a petite discoid foot, has a thin rim encircling the deep interior cavity, and has a pair of horizontal loop handles projecting outward just beneath the rim. Pairs of incised striations course around the top of the vessel, with a register of hanging leaves delineated in fugitive white and red pigment, all atop the lustrous black glaze which envelops the entire vessel save for the flat surfaces of the foot and the lower body. A faded register of white-painted tongues along the obverse side is barely visible, and faint silvery iridescence has developed across some glazed areas. Size: 4.7" W x 3.25" H (11.9 cm x 8.3 cm).

Provenance: private P. Checkowsky collection, Clarkston, Michigan, USA; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Bates collection, Clarksville, Iowa, USA; ex-Joel Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 1990
