NC Confederate Soldier's Archive, Manassas Letters
pertaining to Sergeant John W. Fleming, Co. "E," 23rd NCST. Fleming, a student, enlisted in Granville County on June 5, 1861. After serving in Northern Virginia, the 23rd NC participated in the Peninsula Campaign. Sergeant Fleming was fatally wounded at Williamsburg and died on May 2, 1862. His papers include the following: Unsigned letter, two pages, 8vo, Weldon, NC, July 16, 1861, to Fleming's father in Granville County. It reads in small part: "...We received our arms last Saturday they are the U.S. Musket percussioned I reckon some of the companys will send them back..." Complete with the letter's original cover bearing the Weldon cds and the appropriate "PAID 5" handstamp; ALS, Manassas Junction, VA, July 22, 1861, to his father, Granville Co., NC, four pp., octavo, mostly in pencil, reading in small part: "...it was all over by the time we arrived there...a great many killed on both sides. it is said there is about 4 thousan dead boddies on the field. We have 800 prisners and still receiving them every hour...Boreguard & Davis are both here...Boreguard intends )to) run them off our soil..." With original postal cover having penciled "pd 5."; ALS, Manassas, VA, August 21, 1861, 4 pp., 4to, to Felming's wife and his family at large, content concerns camp life and news of friends and relations in the army; ALS, Manassas, VA, October 30, 1861, four pp. in pencil, 8vo, to "Home," reading in small part: "...I reckoned you heard of the fight at Lee's Burg I saw five hundred of the prisners..." Most content details the activities of friends in camp. Partially printed militia commission appointing Fleming a 1st Lieutenant in the 43rd Regiment, one page, quarto, Raleigh, NC, February 10, 1862, signed by NC Governor Henry T. Clark and blind stamped with the NC State Seal. Folds, very good condition. Fleming must have continued serving in the 23rd before being able to accept this appointment. Partially printed "Descriptive List and Account of Pay and Clothing," one page with docketing, on coarse Confederate paper, "near Brandy Station, VA", October 31, 1863, one page with docketing, oblong folio (9.75 x 16.5), signed by J. T. Bullock, 1st Lt. of Co. "E." (see Lot 548 for an ambrotype of Lt. Bullock.) Sergeant Fleming's service is here summarized with back pay of $46.75 being due his beneficiaries. Interestingly, his wounding is described as being accidental. Very good condition; Included is an unrelated July 2, 1861 business ALS to Fleming's father, one page, 8vo, retaining original postal cover with clear Oxford, NC cds and postmaster's circular "PAID 5" stamp. Some mothing to cover with irregular left margin.
