Description
This is a fine Old "oshe shango", or dance wand, which was carried by devotees at the annual festival for Shango, the god of thunder and lightning. The double ax-blade motif on the figure's head represents a thunderbolt, associated with the sudden, overwhelming, and unpredictable power of Shango. The female figure balancing the thunderbolts on her head represents a devotee of the god. This staff has a rich well handled patina and shows signs of traditional use. The staff measures 13.5 x 4.75 inches on metal display stand. provenance: Ex Fily Keita, Los Angeles.
