Description
Taino (c. 1000-1500 CE) An Exceedingly Rare Stone Anthropic Cohoba Stand. The large eyes and gaping mouth attributed to the supreme male god of fertility, Yucahu. Made from marble. Drilled earspools as well as arm and leg joints. Well defined anatomical relief with profuse symbolic designs. The top of the head in cupped shape to retain cohoba, the Hallucinogenic drug consumed during transformation rituals. Most cohoba stands are made of wood and stone examples are extremely rare. Stands were the primary statuary in religious ceremonies. The Taino believed that the cohoba ingested from the god's head contained his essence and thus his wisdom through consumption.
