Nathan Rothschild Endorsed Check--Gorgeous!

A bank check boldly signed by Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), a member of the prestigious European banking dynasty, as "M Nathan R" at lower right--a bold and uncanceled signature. Issued from London, England on November 8, 1831. On "Smythson Blue" type banknote paper bearing an exquisite "NM Rothschild" watermark, and engraved with the Rothschild Bank coat of arms and ornate "N. de R" monogram at left. Endorsed verso. An embossed four shillings royal revenue stamp is located at lower right. Stamped at center. Expected light wear including folds and wrinkles. Else near fine. 9.625" x 3.625". Accompanied by a nineteenth-century magazine illustration of prominent members of the Rothschild Family, and a packet of research compiled on the Rothschild Family.

The partly printed and partly manuscript bill of exchange, No. 2153, instructed bankers to release 7,552 francs and fifty cents--an immense sum during the period--to "Mr. Amable Delafolie". The recipient Amable Delafolie may have been a textile merchant from Lyon who is mentioned in a nineteenth-century French autobiography of Maurice Persat, Mémoires du Commandant Persat, 1806 à 1844.

The Rothschild Family, originally of German Jewish ancestry, first emerged as an influential banking house in the eighteenth century. The family's sphere of influence was expanded by establishing satellite banks in London, Paris, Vienna, and Naples. By the early nineteenth century, the Rothschilds were one of the most significant financial concerns in Europe. It became the creditor of teetering monarchies, bankrupt kingdoms, and fledgling nation states in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Our check signee Nathan Mayer Rothschild had established the family branch in London; he was the third son of patriarch Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812).
