A.A. Milne ALS + Book, While Writing Winnie The Pooh

Autograph letter signed, with the autographed addressed envelope. Envelope is pasted to the front end paper of a 1925 E.P. Dutton, U.S. edition of "When We Were Very Young". The ALS is loose and lays within the envelope. Written just months before Milne published "Winnie The Pooh", and with Milne having no idea of what was about to become to his life, his sons life, and the life of his honey loving bear "Pooh", he writes "… this book of verses has brought me more happiness than anything else I have written …". Superb content letter, 5.5" x 7.5", on letterhead of 13 Mallord Street, Chelsea …". Dated "July 29, (1925)", which is confirmed by the postmarked envelope. Signed by A.A. Milne in full signature "A.A. Milne". Letter is near fine, envelope is torn and pasted within the book with the autographed address intact. The book is a 1925, E.P. Dutton & Co, printing of When We Were Very Young (the first book which shows an unnamed Winnie The Pooh in the verse called "Teddy Bear").  The well-loved book is tattered, worn, and grubby, with the publisher cloth pulled away. Light scattered internal handling marks.

A remarkable letter housed within the book that launched one of the largest and most loved Children's stories. "Winnie The Pooh and the 100 Acre Wood" completely changing Milne's life, and that of his family forever. Milne went from authoring plays, novels and stories geared more for adults, and launched into the realm of children's stories upon his son entering the fantasy stage of childhood. His first book, a book of children's verses, "When We Were Very Young" was a huge success, but not compared to what happened when Milne created a world for "Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh", the first of which he would have been writing at the time he wrote this letter.  The letter written to a Milne fan from Omaha Nebraska, and is shown in full below:

"Dear Mr. Martin,

I must just say thank you for your charming letter. Getting letters like yours is really the best part of an author's life, and in that respect - this book of verses has brought me more happiness than anything else I have written; and much of it from your country. So again thank you for understanding and liking the book, and, above all, for taking the trouble to say so from so many thousand miles away.

Yours sincerely

A.A. Milne"
